Tutwiler Scholars Program Accepting Applications for 2017-2018 Through April 1

Tutwiler Scholars Program

Students who want to apply for the University of West Alabama’s Tutwiler Scholars Program for the 2017-2018 school year can still do so through April 1. The prestige scholarship program is catered toward motivated and high-achieving incoming freshmen students who have a demonstrated drive and passion to better themselves and who strive to make positive contributions to society.

Benefits of the Tutwiler Scholars Program include:

  • Supplemental scholarships renewable each fall semester with the maintenance of a 3.5 GPA
  • A travel stipend for study-abroad semesters or international study tours
  • A technology allowance for state-of-the-art laptops, tablets and touchscreen smart devices
  • Participation in social, cultural artistic and scientific enterprises
  • Targeted mentoring by UWA professors

Applicants will be selected based on their GPA, test scores (an ACT composite score of 28 or higher is preferred), honors, achievement and an interview process.

“It’s during the interview that we look for that certain intangible something—that spark of curiosity and the willingness to seek and embrace knowledge as an end in itself instead of merely a means to an end,” said Dr. Lesa Shaul, director of the Tutwiler Scholars Program and professor of English.

“The students who participate in the program will reap the rewards of heir demonstrated success as they enjoy opportunities that are sure to not only enhance their university experience but also prepare them in areas that they might not otherwise have the chance to explore,” she added.

The Tutwiler Scholars Program was established in 2015, and the first 10-person cohort of students were inducted into the program for the 2016-2017 school year.

The deadline to apply for the Tutwiler Scholars Program is April 1, 2017. To get the application, email Dr. Lesa Shaul at [email protected]!
